I chose this project as a nice way to stretch myself and learn new skills based around typography. The challenge was to create a text animation void of voice over that helped portray the meaning of a haiku with little to nothing else besides the words.

Full Brief

Visual Haiku

Step 1.

Here are a few initial style frames that I pitched for a general vibe of the piece. The center frame was the one chosen.

Step 2.

The first pass! This one definitely had a lot of issues. The main one being that it was too simple and boring.

So we returned to the drawing board.

Step 3.

I kicked out these two crude passes to see if either excited my art director more then the first pass.

Sad to say neither of them really did the trick.

At this point I was beyond stuck.

So I decided to have a sit down talk with my art director about what was bothering me about this project. For me it mainly came down to the restriction of a 10 second time limit. I felt I couldn't possibly convey the poem well in this time frame. So after discussion it was agreed I could try making it longer. He also helped me brainstorm so more visuals for the project.

At this point the project was interrupted by hurricane Ian. I evacuated to Miami and kept plugging away on my own.

Main Changes:

1. Try a more graphic style.

2. Color! Lets bring that up.

3. Typeface change due to new style.

Step 4.

I created these style frames during our two week reprieve from classes due to the hurricane. I liked this new direction a lot but it was still missing some things like texture.

Step 5.

Here is the next version. I added a background texture and simplified some of the frames. This still wasn't a big hit with the AD so we met once more to discuss.

Step 6.

Alas! Out of time again. I was a lot more pleased with this version for once. This was the end of the official project, however I plan to keep working on it with my AD in my spare time.
